Some 20 years ago I came to the States and obviously I like the place as I'm still here. And one of the main reasons for staying is what goes on today, Thanksgiving. Definitely one of the deciding factors in me staying.
When I first arrived in the States 20 years ago, fresh off the plane with $200 to my name, the plan was to stay for 3 - 6 months, work a while, experience the culture, then fly onto my next destination, (I had a round the world ticket). However in the first November of me being here I was invited to a Thanksgiving dinner. “‘WOW!” We just don’t do this in Scotland. I was VERY fortunate. I was invited to a friend of a friend’s parents. The mother was from Italian descent. What a spread! Bear in mind that I was living pretty frugally at this time, saving my pennies , expecting to be travelling on to my next destination in a couple of months, so this was simply a feast, I was hungry! That mother just loved me. The young kid from Scotland with the appetite of a vacuum cleaner.
Well, 20 years later, nothing has changed. I’m heading out to the beach for a surf to work up an appetite for my favorite day of the year. Happy Thanksgiving!
